Policing, Security and Disaster Victim Management
Derek has over thirty years’ experience as a senior manager in the policing and justice sector in Northern Ireland. His extensive experience includes developing and delivering strategies to combat all aspects of criminality in the most challenging of policing environments, playing significant roles in major events such as the G8 Summit and leading on complex and high profile cross border investigations.
He continues to share and develop his knowledge, experience and skills: As an associate consultant for significant policing review projects in the Republic of Ireland he advised on the management of operational policing and criminal justice issues.
In his role as senior consultant with a security and risk management company he supported their development, operational deployments and investigations.
He also has significant knowledge and experience of Public Protection and provides advice and guidance in relation to Vulnerable Adult and Children’s Safeguarding for a significant religious institution in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
As a UK Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Commander and the lead for the Police Service of Northern Ireland Derek is highly respected both locally and nationally having worked with policing colleagues, forensic specialists and government departments strategically and operationally across a wide range of significant events both within the UK and internationally.
Always keen to share his knowledge and experience Derek developed and delivered training on DVI across the UK with key stakeholders in the public, private and education sectors. He has deployed for a major international emergency service provider adding support and advice to their operations at Grenfell Tower London and George Best Belfast City Airport. Derek is currently a member of BAHID, (British Association of Human Identification).
An experienced leader he has strong interpersonal skills and has motivated people through some exceptionally challenging experiences and periods of significant change. He has a proven track record in managing problematic and contentious issues. He is skilled at building alliances and encouraging engagement in some of the most contentious situations delivering an effective criminal justice response to meet the changing and diverse needs of a divided community.
Derek has a wide network of contacts within policing, the security industry, forensic specialists, Public Protection and DVI in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and internationally. His contacts and experience also extend to working with all levels of political activity in Northern Ireland and government departments in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
